Management Guidelines

I. Purpose and Program Description

A. Library's Collection Development Objectives

The library seeks to provide materials to support programs through the B.S.B.A. level in Management. The library also seeks to support MBA level coursework in Management subjects.

B. Curricular Program Description

The management major learns accepted principles and practices for the management of private and public enterprises. A special focus exists within Human Resource Management. Managers plan, organize, direct and control the activities of people in order to accomplish the objectives and goals of organizations. The goal of the Management program is to provide students with the foundation and knowledge for successful careers in management, administration, and leadership in business. Human Resource managers select and employ a skilled and motivated workforce for the organization. These managers must be well versed in recruitment, selection, training, and development, performance appraisal, labor relations and employee safety and health regulations and the legal aspects of these functions. The Human Resources Management program provides students with a knowledge for managing both personnel and industrial relations activities in organizations as well as in the government sector.

II. General Selection Guidelines

A. Languages: English is the primary language of the collection. Foreign language materials are excluded.   Key works originally published in a foreign language will be purchased only in English translation.

B. Chronological Coverage: Emphasis is on management in the twentieth century. All other periods are treated selectively.

C. Geographical Coverage: Primary emphasis: United States; Secondary emphasis: U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

D. Types of Materials: Indexes, abstracts and encyclopedias and handbooks will provide basic reference information. Dictionaries and directories in the field are also necessary. Publications of professional organizations are of great interest. Collected more selectively are readings and symposium proceedings. Excluded are textbooks and laboratory manuals.

E. Imprint Date: Emphasis is on current material, i.e., those published during the last decade. Retrospective purchasing prior to this will be very selective.

F. Physical Format: Hardbound and paperbound books are selected extensively, including books with media and software. Pamphlets, serials, and periodicals are collected selectively. Microforms and audiovisuals are collected selectively in consultation with the Business liaison.

G. Treatment of Subject: For Management the Library is attempting to build a Level 3b collection, "Advanced study or instructional support level."   Monographs that address the theoretical and practical aspects of human resources management, labor relations and business law   will be collected extensively. Research level monographs in these areas are a collection interest but their acquisition will be secondary to the purchase of instructional level materials.

H. Place of Publications: Emphasis is given to materials published in the United States. Materials from all other locations are collected selectively.

K. Weeding/Replacement: Currency is of primary importance in the field of Management. Every effort is made to insure that the collection is up-to-date and germane to the degree programs offered. Thus erroneous and dated materials are prime candidates for weeding/replacement, unless they retain some seminal historical value. Materials for weeding or replacement are evaluated in accordance with the General Collection Management and Development Policy statement on Weeding/Replacement.
