Murder with Puffins
By Donna Andrews
Meg Langslow and her boyfriend Michael want to be alone, but fate’s conspired to make it all but impossible. Meg takes her aunt Phoebe up on an invitation to spend an Indian summer weekend at Phoebe’s supposedly empty cottage on the coast of Maine. Braving a hurricane and a horde of determined birdwatchers, they make the last ferry to Monhegan Island, only to find their plans to be alone dashed by the unexpected appearance of Meg’s entire family, including Aunt Phoebe. To make matters worse, a famous and slightly megalomaniacal sculptor, who may have been Meg’s mother’s lover years ago, has taken up residence on the island. When he’s killed in an accident that turns out to be murder, Meg’s sweet, slightly dotty father is fingered as the suspect. The elusive puffin, revered by bird lovers and captured in kitsch by an island artist named Rhapsody, is the leitmotif in this charming cozy, the second outing in author Donna Andrews’s series.

Lifeguard
By James Patterson & Andrew Gross
Beach bum Ned Kelly, a part-time lifeguard, pool guy and errand runner in Palm Beach, Fla., has just scored with beautiful, rich Tess McAuliffe. Life sure is looking up, especially from his days back in chilly South Boston. He’s looking forward to another round with Tess, but first he has to help some smalltime hoodlum pals commit a $60-million art heist. It’s supposed to be an easy job, but everything goes to hell—the paintings they were after weren’t even there—and soon enough his pals are all dead, as is Tess. Ned goes on the run, accused of the murders and the heist as well. He flees back to Boston, but gets caught by cute-as-a-button FBI agent Ellie Shurtleff, assigned to investigate the case for the agency’s Art Theft and Fraud department. After some rough stuff, he takes her hostage and in short order they’ve bonded. Ellie can see that Ned’s a good guy who could never have committed the crimes he’s charged with, so the two of them join forces to bring down the actual thieves and killers.

Fatal Tide
By Iris Johansen
Delicate but sensual Melis Menid lives in harmony with her two dolphin pals, Pete and Susie, on a remote, Eden-like tropical island. Malevolent arms dealer Archer is determined to acquire Phil’s research into an underwater sonic gun of immense destructive capabilities. While attempting to coerce Melis into telling him the location of Phil’s research, he kills her best friend, threatens the innocent dolphins and tortures Melis with details from her horrific past. Jed, now in love with Melis and determined to stop Archer, calls in his partner, half-Apache Nicholas Lyon-”a giant of a man”-for help. Johansen writes with all her category romance roots showing.
