What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service through which the AUM Library obtains materials that it does not own from other libraries.

Who may use Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan is available to AUM faculty, staff, retired faculty, and currently enrolled students.

Why should I check the library's resources?

Submitting an ILL request without thoroughly searching the library's
resources can substantially delay your access to the material. Before placing an ILL request please check the following sources to ensure that the library does not own the material.

1. Check AUM's online catalog to see if the library owns the item.

2. If you are requesting a magazine or journal article, check Find Journals (also known as Serials Solutions). To use Serials Solutions, type in the title of the journal or magazine. This search will tell you if the journal or magazine is owned by the library and/or is available full-text through one of the library's databases.

What materials are available?

Generally, the following materials may be borrowed through ILL:

  • Books
  • Photocopies of book chapters
  • Photocopies of articles in journals, anthologies, and proceedings from symposia and conferences
  • Theses and dissertations
  • Microfilm

Most libraries will NOT lend:

  • Rare or valuable material
  • Audio visual material
  • Reference or other non-circulating material
  • Recently printed books

In addition, the AUM Library will NOT accept requests for:

  • Textbooks
  • Materials for class, reserve, or group use
  • Books assigned as required reading for a class
  • Books owned by the AUM Library but checked out
  • Periodical volumes or single issues
  • Unmicrofilmed newspapers
  • Reference books
  • Items of unusual value or rarity
  • Any request that violates copyright law

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Photocopies or other reproductions can be furnished only under certain conditions, if they will be used for private study, scholarship or research. Use of the reproduction for other purposes may make the user liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its sole judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Under current copyright law, we CANNOT request or copy

  • Articles that comprise the entirety of an issue
  • More than 3 articles from a single issue
  • Entire volumes of periodicals

How long does it take?

Most ILL requests arrive within 7 business days of the request date.
Out-of-state and hard-to-find items may take longer. If you have not received an arrival notice within 7 business days of placing your request(s), please contact us (tel: 334-244-3447, email: interlibraryloan@aum.edu)

How much does it cost?

The ILL department of the AUM Library will always try to obtain requested material at no cost to you. If charges are involved, you will be notified before the item is requested. You are responsible for any charges that you agree to pay, even if the requested item arrives after your research is completed.

How will I know when my material has arrived?

When your requested items arrive, you will be notified by email or phone. Be sure to provide a valid email address and telephone number on your requests so that you can be contacted.

How do I pick up ILL materials?

ILL books can be picked up at the Access Services Desk on the first floor of the library. You MUST have your AUM ID card to check out ILL books.

Most ILL articles are delivered electronically. When your article arrives, you will receive an email that tells you how to access it. If the copy quality of the article is too poor to be delivered electronically, a paper copy will be available at the Access Services Desk on the first floor of the library.

How long can I keep ILL books?

The check-out period for ILL books is determined by the lending library, but usually ranges from 2 to 4 weeks from the day that the lending library ships the material. Overdue fines for ILL books are $2.50 per day per item.

Can I renew ILL materials?

Some lending libraries allow renewal of ILL materials, others do not. Please
call the interlibrary loan department at 334-244-3447 to request a renewal.
Renewal requests must be made 3 days before the book is due.

Where do I return ILL materials?

In most cases, photocopies are yours to keep. ILL books should be returned to the Access Services Desk on the first floor of the library. DO NOT put ILL materials in the outside book drop. If you lose or damage an ILL book, you will be charged for the cost of the item, plus a replacement fee to be determined by the lending library.
